Vlogging in Primary School

Vlogging in primary school

This page introduces vlogging in primary school and shows how pupils can be prepared to work with educational vlogs in the classroom. It includes example vlogs and questions to spark discussion and build background knowledge.

The next learning resources present four different vlog tasks:

  1. Unboxing
  2. The Ordinary Day
  3. Beyond the Surface
  4. Our Community.

Each task has clearly defined learning objectives and a gradual progression of complexity. The tasks address key learning goals such as media literacy, multimodal communication, intercultural competence, and inclusive participation. Teachers can choose to implement one or several tasks depending on pupils’ prior experience with video production and the local teaching context. The tasks can be carried out locally or as part of an exchange.

When using vlogging as a tool for exchange and collaboration, it can be meaningful to begin with personal vlogs. Creating vlogs about oneself helps students get to know each other and often reveals shared interests and experiences, while also highlighting differences between countries and cultural contexts.

What do you know about vlogs and vlogging?

Individual reflection

Begin by giving pupils two minutes to think and write individually.

Encourage them to reflect on and respond to the following questions:

  • What is a vlog?
  • What kind of vlogs do I enjoy watching?

Class discussion

Follow up with a whole-class discussion. Possible guiding questions include:

  • How many pupils have seen a vlog before?
  • How many have created their own vlogs?
  • What types of vlogs do they like?
  • Would anyone like to share an example of a vlog they enjoy?
  • Why do you like this particular vlog?

Welcome from Even and Ken!

This introductory vlog introduces two teachers from the project team and demonstrates how vlogging can be approached for the first time. In the vlog, the teachers share their thoughts on what vlogging means to them and reflect on the ideas and aims behind vlogging in primary school.

Even and Ken practicing vlogging

In the following vlog, Even and Ken explore vlogging together from Trondheim, Norway, and Dublin, Ireland. The vlog shows their initial experiences with vlogging, including small mistakes that naturally occur in the learning process.

These moments highlight an important learning point: mistakes are a valuable part of learning and often lead to new insights. Viewers are encouraged to watch this vlog before starting their own vlogging activities.

Discussion in Class

  • What is the difference between telling a story in writing and on video?
  • Do you think sound is important when making a vlog? What difference does it make?
  • What did you notice about the tone in which Even and Ken are speaking to each other? Do you think they were reheasing before they made this vlog?
  • Why do you think it is useful to write a script and make a plan before recording a vlog?
  • What would you include in a vlog if you were to show your city to someone who hasn't been there before?
  • Did you notice how they used different shots in this vlog? What is the purpose of a wide, semi wide and close up?
